On January 9, 2010 AMBS Students in grades four thru eight participated in the 2010 North Jersey National Spelling Bee school competition.  The North Jersey Spelling Bee is the only local program affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Record and Herald News, two daily Newspapers published by the North Jersey Media Group, administer this event in North Jersey for Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and Morris counties in partnership with Bee sponsors Huntington Learning Centers, P.C. Richards, Fairleigh Dickinson University and LAN Associates.  Over 200 schools in five (5) counties participate in the bee.  Now in its 73rd year, the goal of the bee is to promote communication skills, an interest in words, spelling and usage.  The bee also encourages excellence in students, fosters school spirit, individual achievement and state pride. Not only is the North Jersey Spelling Bee educational, it’s entertaining, appeals to the entire community, and allows students to showcase their spelling talents in their schools, in northern New Jersey, and nationally. The Bee provides guidance and underwrites most program costs, including all expenses for the week-long trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. for the champion and an adult chaperone

The first spelling bee in the United States was held in 1925.  Over the years, the competition expanded and in 1941, Scripps Howard undertook sponsorship, partnering with local newspapers across the United States.  The first North Jersey Spelling Bee was held in 1935.  Margaret Karle, an eighth grade student from St. Mary’s School in Rutherford, was the first winner.  Seventy-two students spelled for over three hours in front of a standing room only audience at Passaic High School.  As midnight neared, Margaret emerged as the winner. The very next day she was on her way to Washington. D.C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee, representing the state of New Jersey.  Twenty spellers from across the nation competed in the finals and, although Margaret did not win, she came in 13th.  A devoted Catholic, Margaret Karle Schak would later go on to become the Mayor of Rutherford and raise five children.  Margaret is also the grandmother of our eighth grade student, Daniel L.!

The Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament is proud of our school 2010 champion and our second and third place finishers, as well as the students who qualified in classroom competitions to compete in the school wide bee.

We will pray for Charles S. and wish his continued success as he prepares to compete at the county level.
