MRS. PONTILENA – ART TEACHER

Mrs. Pontilena graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education.  She is certified to teach grades K-12.  After graduating, she taught for one year at Baily-Ellard High School in Chatham, New Jersey.  For two years, she studied privately with Julio Alplui, a well-known South American Artist.  She also assisted an Art Therapist for a year, where she helped provide cognitive Art Therapy for children ages 3-6.  This is Mrs. Pontilena’s 13th year teaching Art at the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Art Education is primarily concerned with visual experiences that are communicated by visual elements such as line, color, space, texture, shape and form.  Students need systematic instruction in order to perceive, create and appreciate the visual arts.  The quality of instruction that students receive in elementary school is of great importance for the development of a lifelong interest in art.

Mrs. Pontilena’s art curriculum is a sequential art curriculum for Transitions through Eighth grades. Her art program develops perceptual awareness, provides for creative art activity, includes art appreciation and builds awareness of art in every day life.

Mrs. Pontilena’s Art classes are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Transitions through 8th grade have Art once a week for 35-40 minutes.

All students’ completed art projects will be sent home in June.

Basic Instructional Goals

·        To help every student develop a sense of personal identity, integrity, flexibility and confidence through expression in visual language

·        To help every student enjoy the creative process and appreciate his/her own uniqueness

·        To introduce students to the basic elements of design: Line, shape, color, texture, value and space

·        To help students develop a sense of appreciation for different artists and styles

·        To introduce students to different kinds of media, techniques and processes that are used to create works of art

·        To guide students in seeing art as a body of vital subject matter with its own unique core of learning, its own special vocabulary and its own incomparable rewards

·        To heighten the students’ sensitivity to the physical world and increase their power of observation

Mrs. Pontilena’s intention is to provide every student with an environment that is conducive to promoting creative growth.  Art projects, activities and assignments are developed to encourage creativity, self-expression and discovery.
