Religion
 
Religion:  Subject Overview:  This year the primary focus is learning, knowing, and understanding the Ten Commandments.  Our Religion book’s website is:  http://www.webelieveweb.com/.  The website offers different activities for each chapter to enhance the commandments and other topics.  The Corporal Works of Mercy will also play a large part this year.  They will be discussed and incorporated into service projects throughout the year.

 

CHAPTER 16: The Fifth Commandment…pg. 183 - 194

 In Chapter 16 the students learn about the fifth commandment…to respect and honor all human life.

 “You shall not kill.”

Math 
 The fourth grade Math book’s website is:  http://www.sadlier-oxford.com/.  There are practice activities and resources for each chapter which are quite helpful.  Also, http://www.ixl.com/ is another website that is quite helpful and will sometimes be assigned for homework.

 

Chapter 8 works with fractions: fractions on a number line, estimating fractions, writing equivalent fractions, factors, fractions in lowest terms, mixed numbers, comparing and ordering fractions, and the problem-solving strategy is “logical reasoning”.

 The Math weekly word problems (WP # __) are due by the end of the week – Friday.  The students are to show their work AND explain their reasoning and process for solving the problem.

The Science book’s website is:  http://www.mhschool.com/.  (It is the 2000 edition and has a “canyon” on the front cover.) 

 

The units covered this year will include: classifying living things, learning about Earth’s history, matter in motion, and electrical pathways. 

 Chapter 1 Topic 1 – Looking At Cells (pg. 12-21):  The students will discuss what the basic parts are of an animal cell and a plant cell, as well as, what each part’s job is and where they are located.

Social Studies
 

The Social Studies book’s website is:  www.macmillanmh.com/socialstudies/2003-5/student/level1.php?isbn=0021506035.  Although the site is under “renovation”, it does provide other sites to visit in relation to New Jersey.

 

The fourth grade curriculum focuses on our wonderful state of New Jersey.  The students will learn about our “Garden State” from its very beginning to where we are today.  The students will also begin to learn about the five regions of the United States towards the end of the year. 

 

Chapter 5: The American Revolution…pg. 104 – 131

The students will read, discuss, and learn about when and how New Jersey helped win their freedom along with the other colonies from a king who ruled from Great Britain.  The American Revolution allowed for a new country - the United States of America -  to be formed under a new government. 

 

Monday:  read pg. 126 - 129 and answer #1 -4 on pg. 129 in notebook

Tuesday:  Chapter 5 Review pg. 130 - Thinking About Vocabulary #1-5 and Thinking About Facts #1-10; pg. 131 Applying Thinking Skills #1-5 in notebook

Wednesday:   Chapter 5 Vocabulary worksheet
