Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament First and Eighth Prayer Partners Celebrate Halloween 2009 with Traditional Pumpkin Carving

As has been a long standing tradition at the Academy, eighth grade students and their “prayer partners” from first grade set aside a morning  to carve pumpkins together for  Halloween. Of course tasty treats were served and everyone, including the jack-o-lanterns, had a smile on their faces.  Afterwards, the first grade students diligently collected the pumpkin seeds, one-by-one, as they will be planted and incorporated into a spring science lesson.

Throughout the school year, the prayer partners share in a number of fun activities together and, of course, attend first Friday masses. This partnership gives the older students an opportunity to demonstrate responsibility, leadership and encourage reverence during mass. It also provides them with a gentle way to reflect on how far they have come in their own growth. For the younger children, what could be better than having the “big kids” as a partner?
